Human Rights Day Celebration

“Today, poverty prevails as the gravest human rights challenge in the world. Combating poverty, deprivation and exclusion is not a matter of charity, and it does not depend on how rich a country is. By tackling poverty as a matter of human rights obligation, the world will have a better chance of abolishing this scourge in our lifetime… Poverty eradication is an achievable goal.”

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour, 10 December 2006

Right from the times of Genesis, (I am hesitant to put the time scale) the human rights had been violated and they continue to be violated to the present times. The Bible tells the story of fall of the first man and woman. It was the violation of their right to choose what is right and wrong for their life. Unhesitatingly, I may say that the sin came because of the right to choose what was right for the survival of our patriarch.  No matter it was a religious, social or political survival, somewhere some how, some one was instrumental in violating the right for survive of the other party. “ Survival of the fittest” quotation is, in no way innocent in violating this human right for survival.

It could be squarely, said that to survive on the optimum level, you have to compete, captivate, usurp and enslave others. The geographic, political and economic dominances, is the out come of the same ideology from the times immemorial.  This ideology has further given birth to imperialism, capitalism, colonialism and enslavement in various forms and factors.

Apart from National pedestal, the human society got further bifurcated into narrow domestic walls of social stigma of high and low, of religious walls of castes and taboos. The physical weakness of women on gender issue turned them into scum of the Earth.  I will not go to elaborate details how they are being treated in some of the societies of the World even today. Sufficient to say, they are treated worse than animals.

The basic needs for subsistence of food, place to live and clothing created some unfair competition and divisions. The societies craved for more and more. Human beings not only wanted bread, but butter too. Not only home to live, but palatial home with all luxury.  Not only clothes, but costliest queenly decorative ornaments too. From a little society to the national disaster under unfair competition made humans to enslave other societies and Nations. This hunger for self amelioration is the cause for conquests, imperialism and colonization.  We may safely say that the major cause for violation of human rights was the geopolitical economy of the nations. No doubt, it was unavoidable in those transitional ages.

The second major cause for this havoc for subjugating others could be related in human social and religious ideology. The untamed instinct of self righteousness and superiority created big and small, rich and poor, low and high on racial, religious, social and political divide. To my mind, no political system has shed so much blood as the religion and social order had, yet it is holy and pious.  No agency of human rights, amnesty International or UN can stop this human madness and blood shedding. If today, the Nations have stopped physical dominance, the rich and industrialized Countries have their enslavement through Finance and capital.

No doubt, after WW11 mankind has not openly  declared World War 111, yet it has fought and is still fighting undeclared wars in many parts of the Globe. Or else it is simmering among Nations as an act of cold war. Above all a new act of imbalance created by a new threat of terrorism has plunged the whole World in to new dimensions of combating Islamization.

Sixty years of human rights doldrums has not achieved any sizeable success in creating sense of human rights and human wrongs. Amnesty International report said in 2009, there are 81 countries, who tortured their own people on religious, social and political grounds. There are 54 countries where we find abuse and unfair trials under corrupt justice system. 77 countries of the World have no freedom of expression, freedom of press or media.

There are 49-52 countries we call Muslim countries as they have over 62% Muslim adherents. 8 out 10 most dangerous countries in the World are Islamic.  The most human violation is done in Islamic countries over justice system, women death and torture, abuse of children and minority religions. More than half of the budget of UN is exhausted in bringing peace and order in these Islamic countries.

Out of neglect, ignorance, lack of education and above all poverty, stems all kinds of violence and molestation of not only human rights, but destruction of all natural resources. Social evils of hatred, racial inequality, religious intolerance, gender neglect, evil practices and taboos of society are acts of violation against human race.

To my mind, let us analyze carefully what is happening in an advanced country like Canada, on this issue of human rights and how they are wronged in many ways. A survey by Correctional Services of Canada pointed out that abuse played a more wide spread part in the lives of Aboriginal women compared to non-native women. It indicated that 90% of Aboriginal and 61% of non-Aboriginal women had been physically abused, whereas 61% of Aboriginal and 50% of non-Aboriginal women had been sexually abused. The findings from this study indicated that 75.9% of Aboriginal women, for whom information was available, had childhood/adolescent experiences of abuse (i.e. gave a general statement or described a specific type of abuse), whereas these experiences were indicated in the case of 55.6% of non-Aboriginal women. Also, a smaller percentage of Aboriginal women (10.8%) stated that they did not experience any type of abuse, compared to the non-Aboriginal women (21.6%).

This is the prevalent relevant condition of women in a neglected group of people. There are most of the marginalized groups of races and religions in Canada, who abuse women and children on this stage. Honor killing, misogyny and traditional family values of male chauvinism. Proportionately, women are less employed on executive job than the male gender. Women are paid lower wages than their counter parts.  This is an affront to Canadian way of life.

When we look upon the Conditions in India and Pakistan on human rights violation on political, social and religious ground, the conditions are appalling. Religiously speaking, Pakistan being a theocratic state has all her legal system male oriented. Women are even less than second class citizens. On political stage since 1947, Pakistan has not seen a sound democracy in its governance. All minorities are second class citizenship. Most of the traditional justice system in Northern part of Balochistan, frontier provinces and Sindh province are done under their own value system.

India in her complexity of religious divide and social separatism, low and high caste has molested all norms of human values.  Right from the times of British Raj, bonded labor, contractual labor system and abuse of child labor are still prevalent, despite all its laws and wrong implementation.

On justice system, there are pending cases over years and years of delay due to lack of fast track justice resolutions. Justice delayed is justice denied an old proverb, worn out in Indian courts.

Some of the States of India, like Chhattis Garh, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh are far more poorer than the countries in Africa. Every day women are raped and young girls abducted due to lack of law and order. Precisely it is enough to say any minority and low castes (Dalits) are marginalized on the pity of poverty and disease.

No where, in the known history of the present time, has any country attacked their own people as India did in 1984. The most sacred shrine of the Sikh was attacked with tanks and mortar fire. Delhi massacre took a toll of 30,000 Sikhs. Where is the justice system of India? All those, culprit are still not been punished. Imagine, 30 years of procrastination of murder, burnings and rape and targeted violence! This act on a minority religion speaks volume of the dominance of Hindutva, shive Sena, RSS and many other such armed Hindu gangs.

Burning of Churches, Christian schools and institutions raping of Nuns, torturing of Pastors is an on going occurrence in India. No minority is safe in India under Hindu fanaticism. No matter we call India as the largest Democratic system in India, yet it must take strides toward the restoration of human values before it turns in to DOLDRUM DEMOGOGY.
